New Testament Introduction is unavailable, but you can change that!

In this updated edition of his widely acclaimed reference work Guthrie provides background information for each book of the New Testament and examines issues such as authorship and authenticity, literary structure, and cultural setting. These discussions, as well as the notes and bibliography, are enhanced by Guthrie's attention to recent scholarship and current issues in biblical studies.

One theory 1 about the purpose of Matthew connects it up with the Jewish persecution of the church. It is maintained that hostility between Jews and Christians had ceased by the time that Matthew wrote his gospel. It is thought that those texts which speak of persecution go back to already fulfilled predictions. To Matthew the synagogue appears to be alien and reflects a time when Jews and Christians were no longer in debate. Matthew does not conceive of the church as a continuation of Israel.
